How Ethics Differ in Research and Therapeutic Practice
Explain the differences between the ethical standards for clients being treated by psychologists in counseling sessions and the standards for conducting psychological research with human participants.
Both areas involve ethical standards in regards to privacy and consent and do not differ in the expectation of confidentiality or privacy being used in the manner in which is understood that it will be taken. The code of conduct Principle A states that “Beneficence and Nonmaleficence in their professional actions, psychologists seek to safeguard the welfare and rights of those with whom they interact professionally and other affected persons and the welfare of animal subjects of research”(American Psychological Association, n.d.). For clients being treated in counseling sessions, however, it is a patient-physician relationship where the outcomes of treatment aren’t something that is going to be shared with others and is basically a physician-patient relationship. Whereas in research there needs to be informed consent to research 8.02 of the code of conduct. there is a study being done for something specific and those involved provide consent to the research knowing what it’s about their rights, and everything that will be involved in conducting the research is disclosed prior to beginning. The information and conclusions of the research will be used to validate or disqualify the methods and quite often are published.
Consider your future career in the field of psychology and describe the parts of the Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct you expect to relate directly to your future career
In any career choice I make, ethical principles and codes of conduct should be applied especially in the medical field. Conversations with anyone should be kept confidential unless it is something that will not harm another and is inconsequential. I am not sure what my future holds however, I do know that the practice of confidentiality and respect for others is an important part of whether you are treating a patient or running a business. Too often I have seen that there isn’t the respect that is needed when treating those we lead and guide. The code of conduct has to apply to everyone no matter what field they are in and especially when they are responsible for others. Above all, you must not do harm to others which are also stated in 3.04 of the Ethical Principles of Psychologists code of conduct which talks about avoiding harm.
