my chosen country is china

Each student will select a foreign country to study in over the course of the semester. You may not choose the United States. If you are from another country outside the United States, I also encourage you to not select that country. While everyone is free to select a country of their choice, I would prefer not to have any duplicates so please get your choices in ASAP. You will see an assignment in the module 1 folder where you may indicate your country choice.

You will use this country to research and write a memo paper, dealing with some specific theories and concepts in International relations. Research can be done on the Internet, a great place to start with this is the CIA world factbook. Please see the research paper folder on the main page for additional tips and resources for writing this. I also encourage you to contact me if you are running into any issues finding quality sources.

The paper will be divided into 4 content areas, each with a set of specific research questions to answer. The final paper should be around 8-10 pages or so to adequately address each research question.

Remember, if you use the Internet to research, be sure it is a credible source (Wikipedia is NOT!!). All papers must include a bibliography and be properly cited using MLA or APA format. More information about researching and using MLA can be found on the writing resources page. Any paper handed in without proper citations will be returned to the student for editing.

The subjects for the paper are as follows. Please demonstrate your research by answering each research question as completely as you can.

Part 1 Foreign Policy Analysis

Research Questions:

Give a brief overview of the countries style of government and demographic information.
Take a look at the domestic political situation in your country. What are the major political or economic issues facing that country today?
Who are the main actors in creating your country’s foreign policy?

Part 2 Power and Security.

Research Questions

Is your country involved in collective security? What is the nature of this cooperation and what are its potential advantages or drawbacks?
Describe and explain the various power sources of your country. What are the country’s hard and soft power resources or deficiencies?
Is your country involved in any type of armed conflict currently? What are the most pressing security concerns for the country?

Part 3 Global Engagement.

Research Questions

Is your country part of the economy north or south? Does your country benefit from foreign aid? Or what is the nature of your countries aid to others?
What Intergovernmental organizations is your country a member state of? What benefits does your state derive from that membership?
What is your countries relationship to organizations such as the WTO, IMF, and World Bank?

Part 4 Human Rights

Research Questions:

How does your country engage in International Law (be sure and explore the relationship to the ICC and ICJ)? Has the country been involved in international legal disputes?
What is your countries position on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?
What are your countries human rights records? Is it involved in any human rights controversies? How has it actively supported human rights domestically or abroad?

It is highly recommended that you begin work on this paper at the beginning of the semester. Each module will contain information about what we should be taking from that lesson and applying it to this paper. There are a number of research links available in the “paper resources” folder. Students may optionally submit to me via email each paper section prior to the final paper’s due date for feedback.

Paper will evaluate:

Attention to the research questions: Each research question should be addressed and explained thoroughly for your country of study.
Proper use of sources: your papers should be well researched, and all relevant information should be properly cited in the body of your paper using MLA citation guidelines.
Writing Style: all papers should be written in clear academic prose, be free from grammatical errors, and proofread.
