There are many different examples of missteps in organizational behavior that can negatively connotate a team, league, or specific individual. In the midst of a Major League Baseball restart during a global pandemic, the Miami Marlins had a breach in protocol that led to multiple COVID-19 positive cases among their club and opponents that threatened to derail an already uncertain season. McPherson and Jackson (2020) examined that multiple Marlin teammates evaded isolation protocols, left their hotel rooms against specific MLB rules, and ultimately led to nineteen-plus positive tests. This lack of transparency and negative organizational behavior nearly derailed an already sensitive startup to a season that many believed could not happen. Ultimately, after a lengthy delay to their season, the Marlins could catch up with their schedule and complete the season with little to no more issues.

Ivanevich et al. (2018) explained that leadership must be present in incidents and solve problems quickly and decisively to prevent further inadequacies. Major League Baseball and the ownership of other teams within the league quickly attacked protocol breaches and got the situation under control. Leadership needs to instill necessary discipline that will change the expectations and instill a culture of compliance. In the highly sensitive pandemic, it was important for the administration to stop the breaches early, reset the focus, and move forward with the specific protocols in hand. In the end, after the scare by the Marlins’ organization, Major League Baseball was able to complete a shorten-season and complete the goal of finishing the postseason on time. Proverbs 11:14 (English Standard Version) states, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” It is clear that the early season hiccups were an embarrassment and threatened to shut down the process before it even started. What is important to note, though, is that leadership addressed the issues, got the problems fixed, and completed their goals without many other missteps along the way.

Organizational behavior is, at its root, the study of how individuals behave in group situations – specifically in business settings. Because the Bible is a guidebook for how we should conduct ourselves, it has much to say about organizational behavior as well. In Galatians 5:7-9, we see Paul calling out individuals who have gone astray. He says “A little leaven leavens the whole lump”. What he’s saying here is that one person’s negative actions will bring ruin to the whole group. This can be seen within many groups and organizations today. When one employee in a certain department does not behave as they should or does not complete their responsibilities effectively, the whole group may lose credibility. In verses 13 and 14, Paul discusses freedom, the law, and how we should treat one another. He says that we (believers) should not take advantage of the freedom that we’ve been given, but should instead use that freedom to love and serve one another. As believers in the workplace, we have the opportunity to love and serve our coworkers in a way that makes no sense to them. We are free in Christ, so we have no need to impress those of the world or to gratify the desires of our flesh. Instead, we can bring the love of Christ into the organizations in which we work and can set an example for others with our work ethic and commitment to excellence. In Galatians chapter 5, Paul also discusses the fruits of the spirit. When these fruits are evident in the lives of believers in the workplace, the entire organization will reap the benefits.
