Karen Donnellysmith Week 3 Post –Virtual Conference Call Posters (See Karen’s Poster Below)
How are conference presentations professionally relevant?
Conference presentations are important in a number of ways. The process will contribute data and give opportunities to learn. These conferences are more timely than waiting for peer-reviewed publications. The most recent and relevant advances are presented. Colleagues can review, ask questions, and make suggestions about your presentation. Your presentation is a chance to advocate for your research. You can practice talking about important points and presenting your data, (APA, 2007).
What elements of the proposal process were most difficult for you, and why?
I am struggling in understanding the assignment, it seems like this is for new research, but obviously, I do not have that. I am expecting that the presentation of my research to others might be difficult. I struggle with mild stage fright. I also am not thrilled with videocasts. I worry about getting the presentation right and visually appealing. I would rather attend the conference in person than virtually, but that is not realistic.
What positive outcomes do you anticipate will come from this process, which may be applied to potential work settings and/or doctoral programs?
Positive outcomes are mentioned above, as well as relevant to future schooling or work. A conference presentation poster adds to your overall profile. Additionally, conferences are a chance to meet others in your field and study their ideas. Meeting others in your field mike makes you be considered for a position. (APA, 2007).

Poster Title: Restorative Interventions

Author information: Karin Donnelly-Smith, Master of Psychology student PSY699.
Abstract: Restorative justice tries to repair a situation rather than punish someone for it. This does not work in extreme situations. Ideally, recidivism will go down if dignity is involved. Offenders can help victims heal through empathy. Offenders are held accountable and can still be productive members of society. When we lock them up it costs taxpayers money, (MCCHARGUE, PAVELKA, and KENNEDY, 2020). The present study is a mixed-method design with qualitative and quantitative components to look at the effectiveness of a single Restorative Justice Interventions (RJI) on recidivism rates. There are two hypotheses 1) probationers who enrolled in brief RJI would have lower recidivism than those with treatment as usual (TAU). 2) If probationers did recidivate, it would be at a lower rate than TAU. Study questions were asked between 2006 and 2010. There was initial State interest, so 383 probationers had to complete the intervention as part of their release. This is a convenience sample from one institution, 130 TAU samples were released on probation. The intervention was one 8 hour session. Offenders were asked to document how people and communities were victimized with the intent of offering empathy and remorse. Results indicated more TAU recidivism. 50% of RJI probationers understood the empathy from participating, this shows benefit from RJI, (Kennedy, Tuliao, Flower, Tibbs, and McChargue, D. 2019). RJ can help reduce recidivism and bring healing to communities. It costs less than incarceration. In Lincoln, NE there is additional support available for offenders to learn emotional skills and take responsibility for themselves, (MCCHARGUE, PAVELKA, and KENNEDY, 2020). As progressive sentence reform has brought changes reintegration of low-risk prisoners into society if backed with evidence-based decisions has increased. Restorative justice is further evidence of such changes, (Vardsveen, and Wiener, 2021)
