Co-Occurring Mental and Substance Use Disorders

According to Townsend, Biegel, Ishler, Wieder, & Rini  (2006), research into the simultaneous occurrence of mental disorder alongside substance use disorder only gained much attention in the 1980s. However, despite the three decades passed, there has been limited research into the implications of the health challenges on the family, or the impacts of the family on the wellbeing of the patient involved.
