In the novel, men and women are portrayed differently in many ways. Men are portrayed as the providers of the families who are always interested in protecting their families. On the other hand, women are portrayed as the images of motherhood and bringing forth children for their husbands and families (Erdrich, 2013). An example is how Lulu and Marie showcase strong characters that ascertain their independence and ability to challenge the Western European image of motherhood.
