Risk, Engagement, and Equity in Play

Risk, Engagement, and Equity in Play

As early childhood educators, we must always view all spaces that children occupy for any possible dangers, opportunities for engagement, and equity. We need to preview an indoor or outdoor space to make sure there are no dangers for the children. This could be anything from broken glass on the playground, spills indoors, or other safety hazards. At the same time, we need to offer children the opportunity for taking risks in order to help develop their self-confidence. Children also need places where interactions with other kids can take place. An early childhood educator should set up a room with areas that are conducive to these interactions. Finally, spaces need to be equitable. All children and families should be represented within the environment, including their culture and ethnicities. Children should have enough of everything they need.
