Age, gender, genetics, family history, and race/ethnicity are all non-modifiable risk factors for chronic illnesses. Individuals cannot alter or manage these things. On the other hand, modifiable risk factors are those that can be changed by a change in lifestyle. These include a bad diet, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, drinking too much alcohol, being overweight, having high blood pressure and cholesterol, being stressed out, and getting little sleep. People can lessen their chance of having chronic illnesses by making good adjustments in these areas.

There are several non-pharmaceutical approaches to lowering blood pressure. These include altering one’s diet by switching to the DASH diet or cutting back on sodium intake, exercising frequently, putting emphasis on weight loss and maintenance, using relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation, consuming less alcohol, giving up smoking, getting enough sleep, and consuming less caffeine. These methods may be successful in lowering blood pressure without the need for medication.
