Analysis of Media Celebrating Diversity

Amandah Ortiz

Option 1

A media character I can identify with is Monica from Friends. Monica is seen as the “mom” of the group. She can be domineering and overbearing but it comes with good intentions when it comes to helping the people she cares about. She is energetic and a bit of a ‘neat freak’. I find myself relating to her character since i find peace in organization/order within every aspect of my life. My friends call me the “mom” of the group because they shared that I bring them a sense of comfort and security.

Monica as inspired me to find the quirks in my personality and view them in positive light. Monica is unapologetically aware of her assertiveness in decision making and her big personality. I find that inspiring and the fact that she has close friends that admire her and her traits.

I find myself channeling my inner Monica and speaking up when I want to get things done. I speak up and worry less of ones perception as long as my intentions are in good taste.

I can see Monica’s character challenging stereotypical female character in the media. She has a strong personality and thrives in leadership roles. She also fits in certain parts of the social norms as she is a hopeless romantic and emotional at times which I find admirable and relatable.

She promotes women empowerment as she portrays a balance of feminine energy and masculine energy. Monica has the potential to to influence young generation to challenge social norms and finding strength in their personal ‘quirks’. Through exploring Monica’s character, one can learn self confidence and acceptance without wondering whether they fit in the social norms or not.
