Part One: Reflections of Racism/Discrimination
The second part of the paper requires you to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of racism/discrimination. Use the following questions to help guide your reflections:
1. What does it mean to be a subtle racist? Please include a referenced definition and example.
2. Why could there be significant differences in perceptions and values of members within the same ethnic group? Be specific.
Part Two: Applying Ethics and Cultural Identity
The third part of your analysis requires you to reflect on your cultural identity and the ACA (American Counseling Association) or ASCA (American School Counselor Association) code of ethics regarding how it will inform your future practice. Please use the code of ethics related to your program and professional identity. To successfully answer the following statements or questions, please use the corresponding numbers in your response:
1. Identify and cite the specific multicultural codes found in the ACA or ASCA ethical codes you will use to inform your future practice. Please explain considering your own cultural identity awareness.
2. How would you apply the ethical code considerations in your treatment planning to be culturally sensitive? How would this inform your referral process?
3. What evidence-based strategies can you use to build rapport with diverse clients or students? Choose two cultural identities to discuss (gender, religion, sexual or gender orientation, race, socioeconomic status, disability status, or culture).
4. Cite resources you can use to dispel your personal biases and to become more culturally responsive and sensitive.
a) Include two to three professional journals on treatment practices and cultural biases.
b) Identify two to three scholarly sources of potential counselor cultural bias within these practices.
5. Define multicultural competence. Based on your increased knowledge, skills, and awareness in this course, reflect upon the growth you have made in your multicultural competence. How will you continue to apply it in your development as a counselor-in-training?
