Paper Three Options:
1.
Pierre Bourdieu discusses several forms of capital (i.e., cultural capital, social capital, economic capital, and symbolic capital) that tend to favor the elite. Utilizing his theory and all four forms of capital, how could this impact first generation college students and their life chances, career aspirations, grades, and levels of overall collegiate success.

According to postmodernists like Jean Baudrillard, everything is a simulation. Much of what we “know” is not through direct experience but through media, conversation, and the internet. Explain this idea by Baudrillard and provide examples. Critically think of the simulations of reality in your own life. What could be the potential consequences of a simulated reality?

Much of what Jean Baudrillard theorized has inspired many sci-fi and dystopian films, television shows, and novels. One such form of media is Black Mirror, a popular Netflix show. Choose at least one episode of Black Mirror and connect it to Baudrillard’s theories.

Michel Foucault argues that discipline and punishment (as an extension of power) is central to society and is enacted rather than owned. In other words, it is everywhere, at every level of society. In modern times, individuals no longer need to be watched by others in order for surveillance to take place. Rather, surveillance/power becomes internalized, and individuals begin to regulate themselves in micro-settings.
Describe this idea by Foucault. Provide examples of self-surveillance and the internalization of discipline and punishment in your own life.
