As our institutions are faced with navigating the choppy waters of liminal seasons, one thing becomes clear, our best outcomes come
from working together.  One of your greatest tasks as a spiritual leader will be helping your institution or congregation listen for
God’s direction – especially during extraordinary times. Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be
able to:
 Plan spiritual leadership for group discernment.

Background Information
Liminal times call for novel approaches to old problems and innovative approaches to emerging challenges.  How does your
institution or congregation approach problem solving? 

Instructions

  1. Read: Chapters 4—7 of How to Lead When You Don’t Know Where You’re Going. 
  2. (Optional) Watch the two videos (Session 2 Part 1(new tab) and Session 2 Part 2(new tab)). The author of the text, Susan
    Beaumont, unpacks her ideas with a group of pastors and Christian leaders. 
  3. Read the articles on congregational discernment from The Covenant Quarterly(new tab) and Vision(new tab).
  4. Begin your paper of 7 pages with your personal description of the difference between problem solving by deciding versus problem solving by discerning?  (You may use the author’s ideas or develop a more complete definition from personal experience or research.)
  5. a. Which of these (deciding or discerning) is more prevalent in your institution or congregation?
  6. b. Why do you think problem solving is most often approached in this way? 
  7. Next, develop a short, (approximately ½ page for each) description of the four practices that Susan Beaumont
    recommends for engaging the soul of an institution in vital ministries and services to the community.  The four are: deepening discernment, shaping institutional memory, clarifying the vocation of the institution or congregation, and engaging
    emergence.
    a. Which one of these approaches would most benefit the congregation or institution in your present ministry context?
    b. What approach would you take to guide your congregation or institution through the practice you identified as most helpful?
