Coal-fired power plants refer to power companies that generate electricity by making use of coal combustion. Notably, these power plants are largely used in developing countries and account for 40% of the world’s electricity. Some of the notable countries that use coal for electricity include South Africa and China which accounts for 94% and 75% of the electricity needs respectively (Longwell, Rubin & Wilson, 2009). However, heightening concerns on environmental pollution has compelled companies to enhance efficiency and reduce coal emissions by adopting clean coal technologies.
