Social media and peer pressure are two major external stressors that adolescents face today. “Social media use has been linked to lower self-esteem, increased depression, risk-taking behavior, and cyberbullying.” (clinicaladvisor.com, 2018). With depression already on the rise within the adolescent population, things like social media can play a part in leading kids into deeper bouts of depression. “An estimated 3.1 million adolescents aged 12 to 17 in the United States had at least one major depressive episode. This number represented 12.8% of the U.S. population aged 12 to 17. (nimh.nih.gov, 2017). Social media tends to remove the typical filter of everyday conversation. Typically, one wouldn’t say in person things that have been known to be posted on social media. In addition to online bullying, kids are viewing videos showing other kids doing daring things and the next thing you know it has become one of those viral challenges. I’ve actually had a 14-year-old patient that deliberately ran into a stop sign on his bicycle just to get it on video and post it to see how many likes it could get. He ended up with a subdural bleed and facial fractures.
