You are on vacation in New York and ready to explore the downtown area. In the morning, you are walking down a very busy street and you see a man lying on the ground, shaking. Do you stop, or do you continue to walk by? You continue to walk down the street, and as you pass by an alley, you see a man and woman yelling loudly at each other. The man calls the woman a name and pushes her hard against a brick wall.
Explain whether you would help the person in either of these situations? Discuss further whether you would be more likely to stop and help in these two situations if you saw other people helping?
Based on previous discussion on bystander effect, explain some of the reasons why a bystander may not help in these two situations?

In such a case, I would stop to help the most critical case, in this case, is the person lying down shaking. It is obvious that the man lying on the street may be helpless and sick, this also means that his life may be at stake. It is hard to see a man lying down because of minor health issues, thus, the person lying along the street shaking is probably sick and weak. The lady being beaten is stronger than the lying and nevertheless, her situation will attract the attention of the general population in the street who will come for her rescue. In the event that there would be people helping the situation, I would not stop to help, this is simply because my help would be negligible or insignificant. When the situation is surrounded by a number of individuals, it is apparent that they are likely to handle it by depicting various thoughts and solutions to the problem unlike when it is one person’s concern.
