Ethical oversight in the criminal justice profession
When it comes to judging whether an action is right or wrong, what we often think of is the consequences that will follow, the intended motive or the nature of an act are not important considerations. In determining the rightness or wrongness of an action, much attention is given to the level of happiness it will bring to the affected group as stated by Mill, a classical utilitarian theorist, ‘an action is right when insofar as it intends to produce the greatest happiness for everyone affected.’ He further explains that if we have a choice on which action or rather a policy to follow, we should always choose one which will lead to the best consequence to everyone affected.
