Nursing Theory
There are many theories in nursing practice. In this case, however, the paper focuses on Patricia Benner’s theory of novice to expert. This theory suggests that in order for a nurse to become an expert in the profession, he or she has to develop an in depth understanding and skills of patient care over a period of time, by going through proper educational preparation and experience. The theory of Dr. Benner does not center on how to become a nurse, but focuses on the ways through which the nurses obtain their practicing knowledge and expertise (Gobet & Chassy, 2008). She points out that a person could acquire skills and knowledge without being taught the theory. She applied the Dreyfus Skill Acquisition Model as a basis for her work.
