This week, we read a short excerpt of Anne Lamott’s book Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life called “Shitty First Drafts,” part of which is a memoir about how she deals with writing a first draft. She writes with a good sense of humor, which helps because writing a first draft is a touchy subject for just about everyone.
In this memoir, focus on your own writing process–your own ways of dealing with writing a first draft. You can focus on your process overall (thinking about many different times you’ve had to write) or you can focus on one specific project (it can even be a project you’ve done for this class) and tell the story of that particular process. You can compare your composing process for writing vs composing something else (music, a video, etc)–is all composition the same?
In your memoir, use some of the stylistic elements we’ve been analyzing this quarter:
- use of parenthesis to include extra information (like King)
- use of short sentence sandwiched between two long ones for impact (like Noah)
- lots of modifiers (be aware of how often you use adjectives and adverbs–try to use more than you have in the past)
- characterization–there may not be other characters in this memoir since it’s about your writing process, but you as the narrator are also a “character”– so spend some time characterizing yourself (describing yourself and your motivations)
- dialogue or internal monologue

The composing process that I use in my writing is a combination of different styles and components. The use of rhetorical writing is one of the styles used. In the rhetorical analysis, my writing composed of an in-depth analysis of a certain piece of writing such as on King’s CV.
