Aesthetics of Popular Music
Some of the underlying features of the musical aesthetics found throughout the African Diaspora are that (1) music plays an important role in all aspects of social interaction and individual self-realization; (2) rhythm is the central organizing principle of the art; (3) music making is communal work; (4) improvisation is widespread and richly developed; and (5) music and dance are connected in such a way that bodily movement contributes to the overall rhythmic texture. These musical aesthetics are conceptual rather than technical or historical and they permeate all aspects and styles of music making in the African Diaspora. But their modern forms of expression first took shape in the United States as Jazz, Blues, and Gospel during the first half of the 20th century. These styles continued to evolve into Soul, Funk, and Hip Hop in the second half of the 20th century and, in turn, influenced the development of Salsa, Reggae, and Bossa Nova in Latin America and the Caribbean.
