Aircraft Biography: Concorde
Passenger-carrying commercial aircraft have long been used as means of transport globally. The need for faster planes saw the early development of the first supersonic commercial plane, the Concorde. The supersonic passenger-carrying airplane (Supersonic transport, SST) was jointly developed by manufacturers in France and Great Britain (Uren). The two European countries signed a treaty on November 29, 1962, to share both the risks and the costs in the early development of the SST. During its development, Aerospatiale, a French organization, and British Aerospace were responsible for developing the airframe while France’s SNECMA and Britain’s Rolls-Royce were mandated to develop the aircraft’s jet engines (Harpur).
