Analytical Essay

For Analytic Essay 1, choose one of the following questions to be the focus of your assignment. [Do not answer more than one of the questions]. Be sure to follow the detailed Instructions for Analytic Essays which you can locate in the Course Information module under Content.

1.Choose one of the stanzas of Song of Myself on our reading list, or one of the other poems by Whitman [other than When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer]. Write an Analytic Essay in which you discuss these techniques: deliberate repetition, varied line lengths, cataloging, alliteration and assonance. You do not have to discuss all of these, but present examples of at least three techniques in Whitman’s free verse.

2. Choose one of Emily Dickinson’s poems that is listed on our Course Outline. Write an Analytic Essay in which you discuss Dickinson’s use of imagery in the poem. How does it convey the theme of the poem?
