The article herein presents an overview of the effectiveness with which Gibbon exemplified the fall of the Roman empire. It highlights some of the aspects that led to the fall of the empire including external impacts of barbarians and Christians, and the internal wrangles among the Romans. In particular, he acknowledges Gibbon’s sentiments that the Romans may have acted right in their treatment of the Christian invaders since they threatened to cause disharmony in the Roman Empire. AS would be the case with any society, antagonism resulting from external forces often has a likelihood of destabilizing the internal aspects of a particular society.
