Introduction

The topic has and currently is a source of public debate and scholarly scrutiny. Crime rates in the country have been on the rise and the relationship between race and crime has for a long time varied between various racial groups. Current studies show that crimes and homicides involving African Americans are eight times higher than those involving people from other racial groups. In addition, rates of incarceration of black males in the country are at an all-time high and about three times higher than the representation of the black community in the entire population.

Associating race with crime has existed in the American social confines for quite a long time. Over the last few years, the issue has escalated and gained a fair share of mainstream media conversations, government action and civil rights groups.
