Acosta, Benjamin. “Live to Win Another Day: Why many Militant Organizations Survive Yet Few Succeed.” Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, vol. 37, no. 2, 2014, pp. 135-161.
In this research, Acosta delves into determining the reasons for the survival of militant vigilante groups. The study concludes that three critical factors contribute to the longevity of the groups, without which they may not even achieve their reason for existence. Firstly, the study concludes that support from external forces play a critical role in helping advance the roles and prop up the success of vigilante organizations. In Mexico, support for the Los Pepes by the government due to the group’s ability to fight organized drug criminal groups significantly influenced the survival of the group. Secondly, the willingness to accept tradeoffs determines whether the group could continuously engage in its activities successfully. Finally, if the adversaries are not strong enough to mount a formidable opposition to the group’s existence, then the vigilantes are likely to survive long enough.
