The Chilean students organized social movements to defend their right to free education because they felt the current system was which had less direct state participation and more profit making programs was a financial burden to them. The system also was unequal in the provision of quality education, as the students of the private school were considered elite and received a better education in comparison to public school students. The students in the Chilean students received the lowest or no student’s grants and subsidized loans, but received partial financial assistance by the state in their tuition fees, forcing them to cater for their own education. Education should be a right and not a product of consumption available to only those who can afford it as it is the backbone of growth of Chile’s economy.
