E1: The essay will focus on a particular example and explore an aspect of visual communication introduced in the unit in detail. It will provide an opportunity to develop the concepts further using relevant literature. You will, therefore, be expected to engage with relevant literature and to provide an example in your answer and to use Harvard referencing. Your essay should be structured as follows: • Essay title • Introduction (Introduce the issue and its background, set the aims of the paper and explain how the argument will unfold – approximately 10% of word count) • Main body (Each main point should have its own paragraph and arguments made should be supported by evidence in the form of in-text referencing – approximately 80% of word count) • Conclusion (Sum up the key elements of your argument and explain how you have answered the question – approximately 10% of the word count) Please note that here is a 10% leeway on either side of the stipulated word count. E2: The visual artefact requires researching photography as practice and diverse styles of photographers and producing a digital photo book that explores an aspect of visual communication from the topics covered in the taught sessions. The digital photo book should include a minimum of 10 images. The photo book can be edited and submitted using a computer. The digital photo book should be submitted as a PDF file along with any research materials. See: arts.ac.uk/assessment On completion of this unit you will be able to: How the learning outcomes are to be evidenced in this assignment Understand and analyse visual texts by demonstrating familiarity with the major theories of visual communication and theories of the visual image (Knowledge; Enquiry) Students must show that they have considered a broad range of perspectives, demonstrate extensive independent research pertaining to theories of visual communication and use appropriate citation (E1) Evaluate the effects of digitisation on visual culture, and on media and aesthetic practices (Knowledge; Enquiry) Students must demonstrate an understanding of the effects of digitisation through critical analysis of the topic discussed (E1) Apply theories of visual communication and visual representation of the social world to the production of media output by using creative and technical skills (Knowledge; Enquiry; Realisation) Students must demonstrate evidence of engaging in application of the theories on visual culture through a creative response (i.e. visual artefact, found photos, illustrative content) to an aspect of visual communication as designated in the unit (E2) Demonstrate an ability to communicate ideas and arguments in academic forms appropriate to your discipline (Communication) Students must use appropriate academic language where needed and demonstrate a grasp of appropriate communication methods; they must show that they have taken due care in preparing the assignment (E1 and E2) Costs associated with this Unit & its assessment Work presented for assessment will be evaluated against unit learning outcomes using UAL’s Assessment criteria.
