Essay 1: Compare and Contrast (30%) , hand in via UM Learn (or email) Word Count: 1500 Students will compare and contrast two artworks discussed up to this point in the course. This assignment asks students to identify and analyse aspects of artworks that can be connected across multiple artworks, such as form, colour, composition or other themes such as gender, race, etc. Additionally, students should highlight the context, materials or values that set the artworks apart. The purpose of this assignment is to connect themes and ideas between artworks, whether it is form, content or context. The requirements for this assignment are: • Select two artworks discussed in the lectures to compare and contrast– if it is in the text but we didn’t discuss it in the lectures, don’t use it! • Alternatively, you may selection one artwork from the lectures and one of your own artworks (don’t make an artwork just for this assignment!). If you chose this option, be prepared to discuss your artwork in a similar way to the artwork from the lectures. • Please include at least three references. These need to be cited in text as well as in a bibliography. Chicago Style Footnotes are preferred in this class. If you have any concerns about Chicago Style Footnotes, please see the examples in the syllabus, otherwise email me! o Remember, all quotes must be referenced! Give credit to whoever said those words! o If you aren’t sure, it is safer to over reference. • Please double space the assignment, and use a readable font (e.g. Times New Roman, Arial, etc.). • Do include images of your chosen artworks, with proper labelling (see class slides and syllabus for artwork labelling formats). Note: You can be as creative as you want with this project! If you aren’t sure how you want to format it, or want to do a video, presentation or other similar format, please email me!
