Memorials and the Healing Process
According to Maya Lin, the memorial was meant to enable people to confront their pain, a significant step in the healing process. Primarily, Maya Lin emphasizes that it is only when one accepts the pain that they can overcome it (Billy, Billings). As such, the memorial enables one to accept that the pain occurred, an aspect that fosters the healing process. Notably, vast changes occur when the emotional wounds begin to heal including acceptance and an overpowering feeling of compassion (Billy, Billings). When the emotional wounds begin to heal, individuals tend to change their perceptions of the historical events by accepting their occurrence. As such, they embrace their history to enable them to come to terms with the wounds of the past.
