Develop and design the organizations training with the following steps in mind:
- Identify training needs
- Determine the goal of each training block
- Write specific, measurable objectives
- Develop materials and methods
- Conduct training
- Evaluate and improve training
For the purpose of this module, we will be identifying training needs from specific regulations, and determining what the goal of each training block is. Attached is the first two steps in Designing and Developing Training.
DB5: CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS HANDLING INCIDENT
Discuss with your fellow learners, a construction materials handling incident, this can be a firsthand event or a current event you find in the news or on a safety magazine website:
- Identify who was involved (you do not have to name names);
- Identify the hazardous condition or hazardous act that resulted in an accident;
- Identify the injury that resulted due to the accident; and
- Discuss the needed training or lack of training that presented in the incident.
Make at least two response posts to other learners in the class. After reading their incident description, discuss control measures that could have prevented the incidents.
4A1: IDENTIFYING TRAINING NEEDS
Evaluate the following sections of regulations to identify the training needs of an organization that deals with storage of toxic materials in drums, hazardous waste disposal, movement of materials by overhead hoists, movement of materials by conveyors, and welding/concrete construction.1926.250 – General requirements for storage.1926.251 – Rigging equipment for material handling.1926.252 – Disposal of waste materials.1926.553 – Base-mounted drum hoists.1926.554 – Overhead hoists.1926.555 – Conveyors.1926.602 – Material handling equipment.
Once the sections have been evaluated, organize the information into individual regulatory lists or into a chart indicating where there is overlap in training needs between the regulations.
4A2: DETERMINING THE GOAL OF A TRAINING BLOCK.
Evaluate the following sections of regulations to determine the goal of the training blocks for an organization that deals with storage of toxic materials in drums, hazardous waste disposal, movement of materials by overhead hoists, movement of materials by conveyors, and welding/concrete construction.1926.250 – General requirements for storage.1926.251 – Rigging equipment for material handling.1926.252 – Disposal of waste materials.1926.553 – Base-mounted drum hoists.1926.554 – Overhead hoists.1926.555 – Conveyors.1926.602 – Material handling equipment.
Once the sections have been evaluated, and organized into individual regulatory training lists or into a chart indicating overlap in the regulatory training, then, determine the goal of each training block.

Storage of Toxic Materials in Drums
The goals of the training needs include:
- Prevent falling of the toxic materials stored in the drums.
- Maintaining clear passageways to create a safe working environment.
- Ensuring that the maximum safe loads are not exceeded during storage.
- Prevent workplace injuries such as exposure to toxic fumes.
- The storage houses should be kept free of accumulating materials that cause hazards such as explosion and tripping.
