Critical Analysis Paper
Task: Choose one of the stories we are reading and complete a literary analysis of a theme, character, or symbol.
You must have at least three points to prove your argument with examples from the story to exemplify your point.
You also need to include the opposing argument (one paragraph) and one paragraph explaining your reason for
picking this story.
Length: minimum of three (3) full pages
Format: Include a cover page, three full pages of the body of your paper, reference page in APA format, times new
roman 12-point font, 1-inch margins.
References: your textbook or handouts
Citation: Include both in-text citation and a reference page. For in-text citation, use the following format- “To
begin, then, here is a scene in which I am the man and my friend Sarah Cole is the woman” (Bank, 1).
Writing Center: Prior to handing in the paper, you must meet with the writing center to review your paper with
them. When you hand in your paper, please include the documentation that you completed this part.
Structure:
An introduction should explain the basis of your paper (your argument). Your introduction needs to have a
clear thesis statement at the end of the paragraph. The introduction is usually one paragraph

For the supporting points, there should be three paragraphs (one paragraph for each point made). Explain
what the paragraph is about in the first line and how it connects to the argument (your thesis). When
beginning a paragraph, do not use direct quotes. Each paragraph needs to include the explanation of the
paragraph, a quote to exemplify your statement, and an explanation of how this quote represents your
argument.
For the opposing argument, explain the reasons why your audience may disagree with your main points.
The conclusion needs to summarize your explanation of all details and your final statement.
