Cones and rods cells perform different functions which ultimately include photoreception. Like any other cell, the cones and rods have a nucleus at the middle of the cell, which primarily controls the activities of the entire cell. However, the two types of cells are differentiated in their activities by the concentration of different organelle, determined by their photosensitivity levels under different light concentration. The cones are primarily useful in detecting light under high intensity, in which case it would require a relatively higher amount of light to trigger responsiveness from the cones than would be required for the rods to respond and send a consequent message to the brain.
