Introduction
Global expansion does not guarantee success for a company due to several factors. While venturing into the international market comes with numerous opportunities, it also exposes enterprises to new risks. Despite the challenges of global expansion, many firms across the globe are pursuing the international market due to limited capabilities in their local marketplaces. One of these companies is CEMEX.The firm began as a family-owned Mexican conglomerate and expanded into overseas market to become the third largest cement company across the world in terms of production capacity. The company has utilized various strategic operations to enhance its growth, such as acquisition. CEMEX acquired United Kingdom’s RMC and Southdown in the USA to improve its presence in the European and American markets (Suder, 2011). Despite the success in Europe and North America, CEMEX has struggled to penetrate the Asian market, particular China and India, which have vast opportunities due to their huge populations. Despite its inability to succeed in Asia, the company is hopeful that its strategic operations of solidifying its position in the local and market and internalization will allow it to conquer not only China and India but also other emerging markets in Africa and Latin America.
