Choose an article involving chemistry published within the last six months. Explain how a chemistry topic you learned in this course can be used to understand the chemistry behind this article.
The name of the article I chose speaks of the process of transforming carbon dioxide (CO2) and ethane (C2H6) into valuable fuels or ethylene- a polymer used in plastics. The researchers aimed to study how metal atoms move and how these drive the reactions. Their research followed two fundamental principles: 1) how tightly bound two metals are and 2) exploration of the binding energy between the catalyst and oxygen released from the CO2 during the reaction (Science Daily, 2022). They discovered that when two metals, such as palladium with cobalt, the catalyst did not bind with the freed oxygen molecule and remained an alloy. These broke off the carbon-carbon bonds and transformed the CO2 and ethane into CO and hydrogen gas, which are the components of syngas. Syngas is a clean alternative to fossil fuels that generates electricity.
In this course, we learned that carbon chains play an essential role in the molecular structure of macromolecules. The carbon’s molecular structure allows it to bond and is the backbone in various chemical reactions. Long carbon chains contain a lot of energy, so the stored energy is released when the chains break apart. Carbon-based fuel occurs from the chemical reaction- of oxidation.
