Great deliberation should be considered in Zenger’s article in the use (or misuse) of power, indirect reference to the text’s concept of power, assisted by the guidance of the Scripture. Zenger points out that ethical lapses seem largely confined to a few people at the apex of the organization. (Zenger, 2012)At no other time in recent history should the topic of the abuse of power and its catastrophic effects are on display as they are at present. Zenger’s article is interesting because the collective data suggest that subordinates rarely view or are honest with their view in the ethical practices of their leaders. In many instances, their leaders are regarded as honest. They possess high degrees of integrity, usually based on the perception that he gained his position due to being a moral person.
In many cases, position and decency lie on separate ends of the moral spectrum, and power or position tends to corrupt. There is something about power that gets people into trouble. (Zenger, 2012). To best understand Zenger’s statement, it is vital to comprehend the concept of power and its influence.
Power is divided into two categories: interpersonal and structural. The dynamics of the two are inherently interconnected. John French and Bertram Raven suggested five interpersonal sources, or bases, of power: legitimate, reward, coercive, expert, and referent. Structural power is frequently prescribed by structure within the organization. (Ivancevich, 2018) The correlation of the two power dynamics is that they are inherently transactional. To prevent unethical or abusive use of power is to reflect on the teachings of the Scripture in matters of morality and that of legitimate power, or a person’s ability to influence others because of the position within the organization. (Ivancevich, 2018) Romans 13:1, “For there is no authority except God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” The Scripture advises us to refer to the moral teachings commanded by God in mitigating responsibility with those that fall under your charge. In John 19, Pontius Pilate asks Jesus, “You will not speak to me? Do you know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you? Jesus answered, “you would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above.” It would serve many in positions of power well to abide by Jesus’ rebuke.

Communication is a vital process to an organization’s structure. There are five elements to the communication process: the communicator, the one who initiates the communication; the message, it is the result of encoding and expresses the purpose of the communicator; the medium is the carrier used for transmitting the message; the receiver, for whom the message is intended; and finally feedback, an instrument that allows the communicator to determine whether the message has been received and understood. When having to deliver a difficult message a leader must be prepared by making sure to encode the message and bringing it all to one format. Once the message has been encoded, I would go over my message to ensure that I am displaying a positive and empathic disposition. Although the message is difficult the communicator has the ability to soften the blow. Next, I would set up a time to meet face-to-face messages like this must not be communicated over email, especially if there is a small number of subunits. Standing before your employees gives them the opportunity to see and feel your energy as you communicate with them. The following step leads to decoding the message to cater to the receiver. This involves relaying the message to the audience in terms they are familiar with. Having a face-to-face meeting with the employees gives them the opportunity to provide feedback. Providing the opportunity for feedback is important because it provides a channel for receiver response that enables the communicator to determine whether the message has been received and has produced the intended response.
