Extended Definition
Purpose:
Create a technical document that defines a term or concept and extends it, using specific strategies.
Subject / Topic:For this project, students will create a definition of a term or concept. The term or concept could relate to the students’ majors, a course theme, or technical and professional communication issues. The specific topic can be decided by the instructor for the section. Please indicate on the assignment sheet whether students are to choose their own topics if there are topics that are required, a range of topics to choose from, or topics that are to be excluded.
Genre:
Instructors can determine the genre for the extended definition. It could be developed as a report, an info-graphic, brochure, etc.
Intended Audience:
The extended definition should be directed towards a specific audience. Tone, language, and style should be appropriate for that audience. Instructors should identify a target audience related to the subject/topic.
Content Requirements:
The extended definition should include a sentence-level definition of the term or concept and at least 3 levels or extensions. These extensions or levels could be created using a number of definition strategies, including partition, principles of operation, examples, comparison/contrast, negation, analogy, and etymology.
Design Requirements:
The extended definition should include at least 1 design element, including graphics, tables, diagrams, photographs, etc. Instructors can determine the number and scope of the design elements.
Source Requirements: 2-4 outside sources
Citation Requirements: Instructors should specify the documentation style. MLA, APA, and practical citations can be used.
Length Requirements: At least 1 full-page
Students may choose a topic from their major.
Details: Part One:
Extended definition: Provides a sentence definition for the concept and at least three distinct extended definition strategies(such as principles of operation, comparison/contrast, word origin, negation, or graphics.
Part Two:
Design choices are effective and appropriate for the audience and purpose. Information is clearly labeled and the documents are uncluttered.
Part three:
Extended definition effectively incorporates at least 2 outside sources. Sources are cited accurately in APA citation style (Williams 2018), as in author and year.
