TOPIC | THE FILM | THE BOOK |
La Raza Newspaper | The film portrays the newspaper as a tool through which the Los Angeles people could document the demonstrations, meetings, organized rallies and all the issues that concerned the Chicano community especially, everyday life, police brutality, racism, education and immigration. It was the place where the newspaper could convey stories that the mainstream media were not interested in. The film also depicts Laraza as a lawyer, the one who told the truth as it was without hiding any facts that disinterested those in power. It was also a tool to bring an awakening of the people to all the reality that was happening around them. Sticking to the first amendment, the activist created La Raza in order to tell their story.

The chapter does not talk about the La Raza newspaper. It gives the series of events that took place through time by the Chicanos in their move to get the freedom they so desired. Starting from the 1960’s the book shows the uneven progress in the land, the fight for land rights, poor education, disenfranchisement, the justice department and dirty trick campaigns that sabotaged a lot in the land. The book depicts a fight by the people to attain a state free from racism, oppression and the need of a better future. Contrary, this is not achieved. The people still suffer the plight of the same things they were fighting for. The beautiful thing is, they now have leverage. The people are more informed and can make better moves than they did before.
