Martin Luther King’s efforts to achieve change within the American society, and achieve the necessary parity in access to civil rights began at his church in Montgomery. It was on the basis of the church support that he was able to traverse the entire country speaking against the white hegemony over African Americans. Further his perspective of the necessity of religion and its role in achieving the necessary welfare for the country’s disenfranchised population may have contributed to his leadership approach in which case he was strictly opposed to violence, albeit unrelenting in the quest for justice.
