Introduction
DIVERSITY, INCLUSION, AND OUT-GROUP MEMBERS
Addressing diversity and inclusion is a multilayered process that requires a wider range of leadership practices. Though diversity and inclusion seem to be different concepts, they are inter-related processes. Diversity and the six key components of the experience of inclusion will be explored in Chapter 9.
In Chapter 10, out-group members are defined by individuals in a group or an organization who do not identify with the larger group. This chapter will describe the challenges and opportunities of working with out-groups within a team or organization and how effort should be made to create an inclusive environment that will facilitate their contributions (Northouse, 2021).
UNIT LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Assess the complex processes of diversity and inclusion (CLO 4).
- Devise strategies for working productively with members of a team (CLO 6).
Directions
Review the unit resources and assigned chapters. Answer the discussion questions and submit for review. Primary post is due by Wednesday (11:59 pm, CST). Respond to at least two peer postings. Peer postings are due by Friday (11:59 pm, CST). Your peer responses should:
- State if you share their perspective.
- Explain your perspective on the issue.
- Support your perspective with reasoning or justification.
Please be sure to use supporting material from the chapter to strengthen your discussion and justify your answers. There is no length limit; however, you should answer each question thoroughly.
DISCUSSION ETIQUETTE
- You should consider the discussion threads as being analogous to the kind of discussions typical of a face-to-face class: strive to be yourself, have a voice, and to say things that are interesting, provocative, and respectful.
- Since this is an educational setting, you are encouraged to proofread, and to avoid the more slang- and emoticon-fueled discourse that appear on social media.
- One of the goals here is professional preparation; if you would not say or do something in the workplace, then you should not post similar material in a discussion thread.
Due Date
- First post due 11:59 p.m., Wednesday CT
- Respond to two or more classmates by 11:59 p.m., Friday, CT.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
For Unit 5, you will address the following tasks in one discussion post (Primary Post):
- Chapter 9 – one opening question and one additional question of your choice.
- Chapter 10 – one opening question and one additional question of your choice.
- Critical Thinking – Read the following report (Global Gender Gap Report 2020 from the World Economic Forum) and share your findings.
CHAPTER 9
- Why are inequities between individuals and groups difficult to resolve?
Choose one of the following additional questions to answer:
- Are all the primary dimensions of diversity in Table 9.1 equally important to your current identity? Why or why not?
- What are some of the competitive advantages of diverse workgroups? Give real-life examples.
- Using the Inclusion Framework (Table 9.3) how can a person move from one quadrant to another?
- What is the role of organizational members, not just the leader, to “effectively address and build inclusion”?
- Is it ever acceptable not to be inclusive of every group? Why or why not?
CHAPTER 10
- Are out-groups mostly negative? If so, why? Are there positive aspects to out-groups? If so, what?
Choose one of the following additional questions to answer:
- How can a leader work to bring opposing viewpoints into a group?
- How would you incorporate out-group members into an organization?
- Why are out-groups so prevalent in our culture?
- Is it possible to eliminate out-groups entirely?
- How should leaders approach out-groups that are a sizeable minority of the group? What if the out-group represents a majority of members?
- Some out-group members are social loafers and have no intention of changing. What would you recommend the leader do in such cases?
- What is a social group that you identify with? How are you similar to others in that group? Different?
- Respond to this statement: “People always remember how you make them feel.”
CRITICAL THINKING DISCUSSION
Read one or more sections of the Global Gender Gap Report 2020 from the World Economic Forum (Links to an external site.) and present your findings to the class.
- What was most interesting to you and why?
- Consider addressing some of the following questions:
- What effects do gender gaps have on creating a flourishing society?
- What inclusive practices do the top-ranked countries engage in?
- What trends do the data show?
- What leadership is needed to narrow the gap?
