Descartes and Locke
Based on the two parts of each author’s work specified below, compare and contrast Descarte’s and Locke’s epistemologies, aka their theories of knowledge. Some of the possible lines of comparative analysis would be whether they are materialist or idealist in their orientations and whether they believe that people have innate ideas or are, at birth, just ‘clean slates’. You could also discuss the roles their religious beliefs play in their thinking. Use quotations from the passages selectively and effectively to support your discussion. Please use quotes no greater than 4 lines, please also elaborate on the quotes that you have written down. PLEASE INSERT QUOTES FROM PASSAGES AND ELABORATE ON THEM.
Here are the two excerpts that you are to use for the essay:
1. Part IV of Descarte’s Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting the Reason, and seeking Truth in the Sciences (Descarte1635 OnMethod, pages, 14-18 in the word document on canvas. In case there’s any confusion about the page numbers, remember that it’s part IV.)
2. Ch. II of John Locke’s An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, pp. 8-21 in the actual page numbers of the book, not the page numbers of the pdf file.
It will be best to only stick with the course materials.
Checklist: each essay must have a title that provides insight about your argument, as well as 12 pt font, page numbers, double-spacing and normal margins. The essay can be no longer than three pages, though it can be less than that.
