Unit 3: Welcome!

The liberal emphasis on the individual was deeply disturbing to many people, who thought that that emphasis displaced community, tradition, and God.  By doing so, liberalism undercut commitments to family, community, tradition, and religion–all of which were important, if not central, to living a good life.  Chief among those disturbed by liberalism was Edmund Burke, the first person to address this conservative reaction in the form of a political philosophy. We will discuss Burke’s views and those of more recent conservative voices who advocate a defense of liberty within an ‘ordered society.’
