Anne-Marie Cusac, “Watching Torture in Prime Time” and Gerard Jones, “Violent Media is Good for Kids” offer varied viewpoints regarding ‘violence’ on television and comic books.
Cusac is investigating the effects on viewers as they watch ‘torture’ and violence on television shows. She questions whether audiences are being seasoned or ‘conditioned’ to accept torture as part of life and therefore may justify easily to accept realistic situations. Should one deal with ‘torture or ignore it’?
Jones argues that “bloody videogames, gun-glorifying gangsta rap and other forms of ‘creative violence’ help far more children than they hurt, by giving kids a tool to master their rage” (61).

- Think of ONE television program, show, movie, video game or book that describes a scene where a victim is tortured. Begin your first paragraph by describing the scene and NAME the media form and title of the program. If you do not know of one, describe in writing a violent scene.
- Discuss how this may be closely related to current events where terrorist acts have been committed, such as, the recent bombings in France. Think about how art depicts reality or vice versa and the effects on viewers understanding and/or accepting violent acts.
- Do you think violent video games or programs such as ‘24’ are harmful or helpful? Explain your answer and try somehow to incorporate the above quotation in your writing.
