Criminal Deterrence
Specific deterrence refers to punitive actions that are intended to discourage criminal behavior in the future by charging an individual with a crime. The intention is to prevent the offender from repeating the same criminal activity in the future. The kinds of punishments which are associated with specific difference may include prison sentences, fines or both. The concept applies the idea that the severity of the penalty varies directly with the probability of future repeat. The effectiveness of this kind of deterrence is a point of debate as prison sentences, and especially those who get extensions tend to have different effects on the offender as some may feel that if they survived prison, then they can survive in the future.
