Getting Started
Psychotic disorders are a group of serious illnesses that affect the mind. They make it hard for someone to think clearly, make good judgments, respond emotionally, communicate effectively, understand reality, and behave appropriately. The person with the condition usually isn’t aware of his or her behavior. Symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, and disordered forms of thinking. When symptoms are severe, people with psychotic disorders have trouble staying in touch with reality and often are unable to handle daily life.
Clients with psychotic disorders typically require not only a clinical social worker to provide appropriate evidence-based interventions, but also the help of psychiatry to provide medication depending on their severity. Hospitalization may even be required in some cases.

In this workshop, you will be watching a video of Cecilia discussing her experiences with Schizophrenia in 2017 and then another video of her progress three years later.

Instructions
1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
2. Read the DSM-5 chapter on “Schizophrenia Spectrum and Other Psychotic Disorders”.
3. Read Chapter 5 on “Schizophrenia” in your textbook Mental Health in Social Work.
4. Watch the following videos portraying Cecilia in 2017 & 2020:
a. I am Not a Monster: Schizophrenia (2017)
b. Schizophrenic 2020
5. Your assignment is to create a Schizophrenia Disorder Education Packet for the family and friends of someone like Cecilia who was just diagnosed with Schizophrenia.
In this ‘packet’ there should be information on each of the following:
a. Information about the illness
b. Illness management
c. Crisis management
d. Coping strategies/problem-solving
e. Managing stress and dealing with emotions
f. Addressing frequently asked questions (FAQs)
6. You can research the web to see what agencies and programs use some of this information but you MUST give them credit by citing the material and including the web address you where it was retrieved.
7. Organize your material (one page for each section a – f above) and make it presentable for printing as an Education Packet for families that could be distributed.
