Analysis of the Movies Fences and A Doll’s House

Introduction

When the two plays, Fences by Denzel Washington and A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen were written, the United States was still clinging onto traditional values that clearly outlined roles based on gender. Gender roles were clear with women having to be dependent on men, submissive, passive, gentle, emotional and indecisive, and very desiring to have security. On the other side, men were portrayed as aggressive, independent, dominant, active, decisive, tough and less sensitive to the feelings of other people. For this reason, there were those roles that belonged to men like providing for their family and making all the decisions while women belonged to the home where they had a role to please their husbands, bear children and they hardly left the house.
