Identify the criteria you would use based on the CRAAP test to evaluate the appropriateness of the research.

Review the evidence-based practice project ideas you described in Topic 5 DQ 1. Based on your initial ideas, what types of scholarly nursing research (such as quantitative or qualitative research, peer-reviewed resources, etc.) would be required to further investigate the issue? Select an article related to your topic. Identify the criteria you would use based on the CRAAP test to evaluate the appropriateness of the research. Why is it important to select research that meets these criteria? Evaluate the “CRAAP Test” article from the New Jersey Institute of Technology Library, located in the topic Resources. Explain the five criteria as they relate to your selected article.

This is my post from topic 5 DQ1

Working as a family nurse practitioner specializing in the care of post-surgical patients, one of the biggest challenges is the nurse-to-patient ratio caused by the nurse shortages. Variations in the number of post-operative mortalities have been associated with differences in staffing levels. When the staffing is poor, there are increased necessary but missed nursing care incidences. Missed nursing care significantly contributes to mortality and morbidity among post-surgery patients. Nursing shortages are also associated with burnout syndrome (BOS), leading to poor quality of care.

Burnout syndrome is a socio-psychological phenomenon of emotional, physical, and motivational exhaustion due to chronic occupational stress. Friganović et al.(2019) state that BOS is manifested as diminished professional and personal achievements, depersonalization, and long-term emotional exhaustion. BOS occurs when nurses fail to meet high expectations due to poor working conditions. Nurse develop exhaustion, anger, frustration, and displeasure with their work. Nurses who work in unhealthy work environments often experience physical symptoms such as gastrointestinal problems, muscle tension, headaches, and insomnia.

BOS has resulted in high staff turnover and poor patient satisfaction in the post-surgical unit. Following surgery, most patients require constant monitoring, which is impossible due to staff shortages; hence, patients are subjected to unnecessary extended hospital stays. Working in this unit has been stressful because of the high nurse responsibilities and challenging nurse routines. The inability to offer quality and timely nursing services to our patients has been stressful for my colleagues and me because we do not have the time to develop effective nurse-patient relationships. We spend most of the time trying to complete the nursing duties such as documentation and giving pain medications and antibiotics.

The theory best applicable in caring for surgical patients under stressful conditions is the Watson theory. According to Pajnkihar et al.(2017), Jean Watson’s theory is concerned with how the nursing staff expresses care to the clients. The approach emphasizes the humanistic aspects of nursing related to nursing practice and scientific knowledge. The theory states that nursing is concerned with promoting health, preventing illness, caring for the ill, and restoring health. Jean Watson believes that the center of nursing practice is care. Care is superior to simple medical care. Watson believes that humans cannot be given the same treatment as objects and stresses the importance of interpersonal relationships between caregivers and patients.

Great interpersonal relationships benefit the patient, the nurse, and other healthcare workers. Additionally, nurses must take care of themselves before taking care of others. She further states that it is essential to rejuvenate energy reserves and replenish our spiritual bank. Therefore, the theory is beneficial in caring for a patient in stressful departments such as mine because we learn to care for ourselves to provide quality and safe care to our patients. Moreover, patients know better from nurses who practice what they teach. For example, we cannot teach our patients the importance of good mental health while we are depressed. The theory affirms that caring for clients and everyone around results in a better outcome. The concern of staff shortage in my area of specialization needs to be addressed to reduce the heavy workload.
