NOLA Levee System Vulnerability
The city of New Orleans due to its geographical location has been prone to many national catastrophes like hurricanes, flooding, tropical storm, and coastal flooding. Hurricane Katrina disaster, just like an orange, storm was able to peel away all the engineering marvelous that protect NOLA and to really show its vulnerabilities. The State of Louisiana asked the federal government for assistance of tens of hundreds of billions in federal aid so the repairs and upgrades can be made. Since Hurricane Katrina, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers has built lots of improvements and these changes are also creating lots of complacency among New Orleans citizens. The biggest concern is that NOLA is sinking about 4 inches every year and eventually the City of New Orleans will be inundated by the Gulf of Mexico according to some research (HGS, 2009).
There are many environmental issues the city of New Orleans needs to address after Hurricane Katrina, other than the next big storm, the city sinking and another coastal or river flooding. The future of the city is now relying in technology and repairs from the Army Corp of Engineers to stop all these natural catastrophes from happening, will NOLA become another Atlantis? Or should the residents of NOLA just abandon the city and move to higher ground for we know now that the city is sinking into the Gulf of Mexico and given the rapid ocean level rising due to climate changes NOLA will become the Venice of the Americas or should the local authorities and the residents accept defeat and relocate the city to above-sea level grounds.
The building of the city of New Orleans back in the 1700’s by the French perhaps was a fundamental design disaster to build in this land. The residences of New Orleans should be the ones having the final word, not the state, the federal government, or the Corp of Engineers to whether a catastrophe will occur again or not. It might just be a matter of decades before you can navigate around the French Quarters in a Venetian style gondola as you enjoy your favorite drink “The Hurricane” while listening to some amazing Jazz.
