English Writing Question
The objective of this assignment is to apply what you have learned about finding and evaluating source
material. The finished assignment will likely be 2-3 pages in MLA format.
Finally, you will discuss how these different types of sources compare and when you think it would be
appropriate to use each type of source.
Here are the steps:
1) Choose a topic you are interested in, based on your career field of interest. For example, if you are
interested in criminal justice, you might look for articles related to assisting those with mental health crises
or if you are going into the medical field, maybe you look for an article on autoimmune disorders. There
are many possibilities; if you are having a hard time choosing a topic, please email me or give me a call.
2) Use this video to learn how to access the licensed databases for journal articles. This will be a great
tool for you throughout college. When you search, make sure to choose the filters for “peer reviewed”
article and “full text.” You will get these filters when your first batch of results pops up. When you find an
article, write about the following:
Briefly summarize the article
Provide a works cited entry for the article
Evaluate the article using the specific criteria discussed in our assigned reading. Is it reliable?
Why? How do you know this? What are its strengths and weaknesses as a source?
How could you use this source to support a particular claim?
3) Using your preferred search engine, look for an internet source on the same topic that is not a peer
reviewed article. Write about the following:
Briefly summarize the article
Provide a works cited entry for the article
Evaluate the article using the specific criteria discussed in our assigned reading. Is it
reliable? Why? How do you know this? What are its strengths and weaknesses as a
source?
How could you use this source to support a particular claim?
4) Finally, write one paragraph as to how these two types of sources compare. What do you notice about
the similarities and differences between the article from a peer reviewed journal and a website you found on the internet?
