History of Populism
The term ‘populism’ was first developed during the 19th century. Populism can be described as political approaches which will often be appealing to the people and will often criticise people who are referred to as ‘elite.’ The political approaches will often recognise ‘the people’ as individuals who are morally upright whereas ‘the elite’ will be regarded as corrupt individuals who only aim to serve themselves. The approaches, however, have failed to define the individuals who will be regarded as part of ‘the people.’ The approaches will focus on the will of the people which should surpass the will of the individuals who are regarded as part of the elite (Bryder, 2009).
