INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAPER
Examining Both Sides of a Family Policy Issue
Task: The purpose of this paper is for you to:
1. apply the bioecological model to our current situation,
2. develop your professional writing skills, especially with regard to common elements of APA Style,
3. continue to develop your ability to paraphrase information effectively.
Paper 2 Topic: Applying the Bioecological Model Today
Think about Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model (also known as ecological systems theory). In your own words, explain the model based on our lecture/discussion. Please do not use any direct quotes from any sources on the internet. Just explain using your first-person account based on our class lecture/discussion. Feel free to speak in first-person and reference our class discussion. Imagine you are the individual at the center of the model. Explain what innate traits you bring to the environment. Then, explain how each environmental level influences you (from microsystem to chronosystem). Next, describe someone you know well (but do not use their real name or any other identifying features). Imagine they are at the center of the model. Describe what innate traits they bring to the environment. Then, explain how each environmental level influences them. Next, summarize your thoughts about the impact of the environment on individual and family development based on your personal observations. Finally, offer any recommendations for families or professionals working with families based on your thoughts about the potential impact of the environment.
Using Lecture Material or Conversations With People You Know: Please note that only an in-text citation is required for lectures or personal conversation in APA Style. Lectures or personal conversations do NOT need to appear in the reference list—only in the paper body.
For your lectures or personal conversations:
Many families feel stressed by balancing the demands of both work and family (E. Jordan, personal communication, March 22, 2017).
L. Miller explained that he lived with his girlfriend for 10 years before they broke up (personal communication, December 31, 2015). According to him, she did not want to get married. He regretted his decision to cohabitate with her because he felt like he wasted his time.
Things to Remember:
1. Your paper should follow this format:
• Title page
• Introduction (1 paragraph with a goal statement for the paper at the end)
• Application of the bioecologial model to your own life (about 1 page)
• Application of the bioecological model to someone else’s life (do not use their name, about 1 page)
• Summary of your opinion about potential impact of the environment (about ½ page)
• Recommendations for families or professionals working with families (1 paragraph)
2. If you only use personal communication and lectures, you do not need a reference page (just in-text citations). If you decide to include additional sources like your textbook or research articles, then you will need to include a reference page in addition to in-text citations.
3. Proofread your paper, and use a professional tone. Do not use run-on sentences, slang, or contractions (such as didn’t, won’t, can’t, I’m, ain’t, etc.).
4. Plagiarism: As stated in the syllabus, plagiarism will not be tolerated. Be certain that you do not plagiarize materials presented in class, in any text, or online. View the videos posted on your Blackboard website to be sure you understand how to paraphrase. Do not simply use a thesaurus to change a few words – that constitutes plagiarism. If you are confused about writing a definition in your own words, perhaps first describing the theory/concept to another person will help you. Also, be sure to cite the text or class notes as appropriate.
5. Self-Plagiarism: Self-plagiarism also will not be tolerated. You are prohibited from using work (or portions/sections of work) completed for another course (even at a different college or university) for fulfillment of this assignment. If you self-plagiarize, you will receive an automatic zero for this assignment.
6. Do not use subheadings for different sections of your paper. Given the relatively short length of your paper, subheadings are unnecessary.
7. Late papers will be accepted. However, to maintain fairness for other students and to ensure grading can be completed on time, late papers will be penalized 10% for each day late.
8. Remember to check the rubric.
