Film Noir
Even though film noir is a French phrase that literally means “black film” the film genre originated from the United States’ Hollywood. Even though some of the popular directors of noir films were foreign-born, most of the directors of movies that followed the noir genre were Americans. Some of the popular American directors of noir films, include Samuel Joseph H. Lewis, Orson Welles, and Nicholas Ray. Moreover, important sources for the scripts that were used to produce noir films were the underworld culture of the U.S. pulp fiction. For example, almost 20 percent of the noir movies that were produced between 1941 and 1948 were adaptations of American hard-boiled novels (Belton, 2009).
